When Do Wisdom Teeth Come In?

Children start getting their adult teeth (also called permanent teeth) around the age of 6 or 7. Over the next several years, they will shed their baby teeth. When your child has a loose baby tooth, encourage them to gently wiggle it with a clean finger or tissue. Avoid pulling it out; it will fall out when it is ready! As the baby teeth fall out, your child’s underlying permanent teeth will gradually erupt until they have 28 adult teeth by age 13.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Your child may also have several wisdom teeth, or third molars. These are the last teeth to erupt. Unfortunately, these troublesome teeth often cause dental issues.

Wisdom teeth are the final molars that erupt in the very back of the jawline. Most people have two upper wisdom teeth and two lower wisdom teeth, though it is possible to have fewer or more than this.

If they come in properly, wisdom teeth can help assist with chewing. However, they are not considered a necessary set of molars.

If you don’t have enough room in your mouth to accommodate these late-blooming teeth, they can cause crowding, shifting of your other teeth, damage to the neighboring tooth roots, and an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

What Age Do Wisdom Teeth Erupt?

The average age range for wisdom teeth to erupt is between 17 and 26. When any tooth tries to erupt, there will be a certain level of discomfort and sensitivity. If you notice that your wisdom teeth are causing severe pain, you need to contact your dentist right away.
